The First Year Teacher Book Tour

I am linking up with Brian & Eric of Wise Guys Resources with some tips for first year teachers.

These days, new teachers are leaving the field at a rate of 50% - decreasing the teacher population while the student population increases.  Brian and Eric of Wise Guys have used their combined experience of 40 years in the classroom to help tackle that problem, by writing an e-Book to motivate new teachers along with creating a large resource guide to equip new teachers with the tools they need for success.  They also created a free ebook for more established teachers to start the new school year off strong.

I so remember my first year as a new teacher!  I wondered why I was even hired! (Did they not know that I didn't have a clue how to do 'this teacher thing'?!)
Yes, I had graduated with a degree,
a teaching certificate,
and an idealistic philosophy of education
(that had no basis in research or reality).
What I did not have was any idea or training on how to manage my classroom of 30 second graders.
I did not have access to many teaching resources 40 years ago, there was no Google, no Pinterest, no teacher resource stores, and no Teachers Pay Teachers!  YIKES!
Consequently, I learned many most lessons the hard way.  I gradually came to realize that it didn't matter how great my lessons were - if I did not have the attention of my students - they were not going to learn anything.  I learned from my colleagues and read what ever I could find on teaching and learning.  I started teaching routines and incorporated a motivating classroom management system.  I survived and eventually 'flourished'.  :)

I wish I had had access to this eBook of tips and ideas for the first year teacher!!! It would have taken a lot of the trial and error (frustration and tears) out of my first years in the classroom.
So my tip to first year teachers - read this eBook!
Search the blog world - learn from those who have figured out how to
do 'this teacher thing'!
And find the joy in the journey!
Here are some more tips for you from more teachers who care!

Improve Math Fact Fluency with Super Heroes!

I created this set of games because we all know. . .
'worksheets do not grow dendrites'!
Learning games provide a fun, non threatening opportunity
for students to get the needed practice to increase their math fact fluency.
They will be engaged and having fun.
And you will NOT have any papers to grade!
Sounds like  WIN WIN!
These math fact fluency addition games were designed using the mental math strategies. Research confirms that students learn the basic math facts quicker if they learn them in the context of the mental math strategies. Mental Math strategies not only help students increase their math fact fluency, but they are understanding number sense and how the numbers are related to each other.
My kids love this game!  BANG!
Notice the mental math strategy card - game rules are on the back.

I love things organized - don't you?!
I print, laminate, bag, and put them all in a box for easy access.
I use weekly assessments, and create small group by the strategy each needs more practice on.
I love seeing my kids 'flourish' in their math fact fluency!
and so will you!

3 Questions to Consider (before putting it on your walls)

This is the perfect time to be thinking about the classroom decor
you have on the walls of your classroom.
Before you put something up on your walls -
or leave something up for another school year......Consider....

If the answer is YES to these three questions, then it has earned its right
to take up your precious (and limited) classroom wall real estate.

I am featuring "Phonetic Alphabet" for you because
I can answer 'YES' to all of the above questions!!

This is not just a cute classroom decoration - but it is cute ;) -

YES, it is a learning tool used daily by the students to help them learn the different phonetic spellings some sounds make.
For example, the letter 'c' makes the /c/ sound, but so does 'k', 'ck', and 'ch'.  There are four spellings of that one sound - and all three are on the 'Cc' Alphabet Card.

YES, it is a teaching tool that I used every. single. day. of. the. year!

And, YES, this alphabet is visually appealing.
